The Honourable Society of Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court in London which serve as the professional association for barristers in England and Wales. Several centuries ago, the Inns were buildings or precincts where barristers traditionally lodged, trained, and carried on their profession.
Middle Temple is steeped in history and tradition, and also a friendly and forward-looking Inn of Court. With more than twenty thousand members in the UK and across the world, it is an active worldwide network with much to offer the society.
The Inn’s estate on the banks of the Thames in London was provided by Letters Patent to The Honourable Society of Middle Temple in 1608 on condition that it would always be used for educating and accommodating those practising or training in the Law. Over four hundred years later, Middle Temple’s core purposes are still based on these founding principles.
Middle Temple exists to promote and support the rule of law throughout the common law world, and the fair and effective administration of justice where which the rule of law requires. The rule of law is an essential cornerstone of a modern and pluralistic society, and a strong, independent and ethical Bar is an essential component of it.
Middle Temple supports the Bar by supporting its members throughout their professional careers. It promotes excellence in advocacy and the highest standards of professional ethics through its education and training, and the collegiate ethos it instils in its members.
The Middle Temple of Society in Hong Kong supports the work of the Honourable Inn of Middle Temple in London. The Society’s key focus is providing funding for pupil barristers and junior members of the Bar to undertake advocacy training in London, and enabling its members to connect with one another at various social events in Hong Kong throughout the year.
The popularity of the Society is such that members of other Inns of Court are welcomed, as well as those who are qualified in Hong Kong and not a member of an Inn. The latter now forms the great majority of its 300 strong membership, made up of a blend of barristers, judges, and students.
